Euro area grows 0.8% & EU25 up 0.5% in industrial maker prices

The euro area1 industrial producer price index2 rose by 0.8 percent in April 2006 compared with the previous month. In April 2006, EU25 prices increased by 0.5 percent. In March3 prices gained 0.5 percent in the euro area and 0.3 percent in the EU25.

In April 2006 compared to April 2005, industrial producer prices rose by 5.4 percent in the euro area and by 6.6 percent in the EU25.

Monthly changes
In April 2006, compared to the previous month, prices in total industry excluding the energy sector increased by 0.4 percent in both the euro area and the EU25. Prices in the energy sector rose by 2.1 percent and 0.7 percent respectively.

Intermediate goods gained 0.8 percent in the euro area and 0.9 percent in the EU25. In both zones, durable consumer goods increased by 0.2 percent, and capital goods and non-durable consumer goods by 0.1 percent.

Among Member States for which data are available, the highest increases were registered in Greece (+1.3 percent), Germany and Italy (both +1.0 percent). The only decreases were registered in the United Kingdom (-0.6 percent) and Denmark (-0.3 percent), while prices in Ireland remained unchanged.

Annual changes
In April 2006, compared to April 2005, and excluding the energy sector, industrial prices increased by 2.2 percent in the euro area and by 2.1 percent in the EU25. Prices in the energy sector rose by 17.6 percent and 21.6 percent respectively. Intermediate goods gained 3.3 percentin the euro area and 3.4 percent in the EU25.
