Retail trade volume climbs 2.8% in euro area & 3.8% in EU25

Eurostat announces that in April 2006, compared to April 2005, the volume of retail trade1 grew by 2.8 percent in the euro area2 and by 3.8 percent in the EU25. Compared to March 20063, the retail sales index rose by 1.4 percent in the euro area and by 1.1 percent in the EU25.
Annual changes In April 2006, compared to April 2005, retail trade of “food, drinks and tobacco” gained 1.9 percent in the euro area and 2.6 percent in the EU25. The non food sector increased by 3.2 percent and by 4.6 percent respectively.
Among the Member States for which data are available, total retail trade rose in Estonia (+17.0 percent), Latvia (+16.6 percent), Sweden (+12.5 percent), Luxembourg (+9.7 percent), Slovakia (+9.1 percent), Poland (+7.8 percent), Finland (+7.6 percent), Slovenia (+5.5 percent), Lithuania (+5.0 percent), the United Kingdom (+4.8 percent), Austria (+4.3 percent), Denmark (+4.0 percent), Portugal (+3.1 percent), Germany (+2.8 percent), France (+2.4 percent) and Belgium (+1.9 percent), while it remained stable in Spain.
Monthly changes In April 2006, compared with March 2006, “food, drinks and tobacco” gained 1.1 percent in the euro area and 0.7 percent in the EU25. The non food sector increased by 1.5 percent in the euro area and by 0.9 percent in the EU25.
Among the Member States for which data are available, total retail trade increased in Slovenia (+4.4 percent), Luxembourg (+2.9 percent), Germany (+2.8 percent), Estonia and Poland (both +2.5 percent), Belgium (+2.1 percent), Sweden (+1.8 percent), Austria (+1.6 percent), Finland (+1.5 percent), Latvia and Portugal (both +1.0 percent), France (+0.9 percent), the United Kingdom (+0.4 percent) and Slovakia (+0.2 percent), remained stable in Denmark, while falls were recorded only in Lithuania (-1.4 percent) and Spain (-0.6 percent).
