Euro area & EU25 employment rises 0.3%

According to provisional national accounts estimates by Eurostat, the seasonally adjusted number of persons employed in the euro area1 rose by 0.3 percent (427 000 persons) during the first quarter of 2006.

During the same period, the number of persons employed in the EU25 also grew by 0.3 percent (612 000 persons).

In the fourth quarter of 2005, growth rates were +0.3 percent in the euro area and +0.2 percent in the EU25. Compared to the first quarter of 2005, employment grew by 0.9 percent in both the euro area and the EU25 in the first quarter of 2006, following +0.7 percent and +0.8 percent respectively in the fourth quarter of 2005.

Eurostat estimates that, in the first quarter of 2006, 138.0 million men and women were employed in the euro area and 202.9 million in the EU25. These figures are seasonally adjusted.

In this publication Eurostat, the Statistical Office of the European Communities, releases for the first time quarterly data on employment, based on national accounts data. These figures are calculated within the same conceptual framework as other national accounts variables, such as GDP, output and compensation of employees.

They provide a picture of labour input consistent with the output measures of national accounts.

Estimates of employment in national accounts may differ from results of other statistics and surveys, in particular the labour force survey (LFS). There are differences due to integration of sources and due to conceptual reasons:
