Euro area annual inflation up 2.5% & EU25 rises 2.4%

Euro area annual inflation was 2.5 percent in May 2006, up from 2.4 percent in April. A year earlier the rate was 2.0 percent. Monthly inflation was 0.3 percent in May 2006. EU25 annual inflation was 2.4 percent in May 20062, up from 2.3 percent in April. A year earlier the rate was 2.0 percent. Monthly inflation was 0.3 percent in May 2006. EICP3 annual inflation was 2.4 percent in May 2006.

Inflation in the Member States In May 2006, the lowest annual rates were observed in Poland (1.5 percent), Finland (1.7 percent), the Netherlands (1.8 percent) and Sweden (1.9 percent), and the highest rates in Latvia (7.1 percent), Slovakia (4.8 percent), Estonia (4.6 percent) and Spain (4.1 percent). Compared with April 2006, annual inflation rose in seventeen Member States, remained stable in five and fell in two.
The lowest 12-month averages4 up to May 2006 were in Finland (1.1 percent), Sweden (1.2 percent), Poland (1.3 percent) and the Netherlands (1.6 percent); the highest were in Latvia (6.9 percent), Estonia (4.2 percent), Luxembourg (3.9 percent) and Spain (3.7 percent).
Euro area The main components with the highest annual rates in May 2006 were housing (5.7 percent), transport (5.2 percent) and alcohol and tobacco (2.8 percent), while the lowest annual rates were observed for communications (-3.4 percent) and recreation and culture (-0.4 percent).
