Manufacturing employment drops

According to the Federal Statistical Office, at the end of February 2006, 5.9 million persons were employed in the establishments of enterprises with 20 employees and more in the field of manufacturing, mining and quarrying in Germany.

The number of persons employed was thus down by 76,700 or 1.3 percent from the corresponding month of the preceding year.

The total turnover (excluding value-added tax) amounted to EUR 120.2 billion; this was an increase of 7.6 percent compared with February 2005.

The turnover abroad contained in this figure rose 12.7 percent to EUR 51.5 billion.
