Euro area external trade deficit 2bn euro for Apr 2006

The EU25 trade surplus with the USA increased (+21.8 bn euro in January-March 2006 compared with +18.3 bn in January-March 2005), but decreased with Switzerland (+3.5 bn compared with +4.7 bn).
The EU25 trade deficit grew strongly with China (-29.2 bn compared with -22.8 bn), Russia (-19.8 bn compared with -11.9 bn) and Norway (-12.0 bn compared with -7.2 bn), and slightly with Japan (-7.6 bn compared with -6.9 bn).
Concerning the total trade of Member States, the largest surplus was observed in Germany (+38.9 bn euro in January-March 2006), followed by the Netherlands (+9.6 bn), Ireland (+7.5 bn) and Sweden (+5.0 bn). The United Kingdom (-23.9 bn) registered the largest deficit, followed by Spain (-21.1 bn), Italy (-9.1 bn), France (-8.6 bn) and Greece (-8.2 bn).
