France, Canada, Germany, Japan, Italy, Russia, Great Britain and the United States, plus President Barroso and Finnish Prime Minister Vanhanen came together for the G8 Summit in St Petersburg (Russia) from 15 to 17 July, with Russia holding the G8 rotating presidency.

As expected, energy was one of the hot topics of the G8 summit, but G8 leaders also focused on WTO trade talks after overcoming their differences to appeal for an end to the Middle East crisis.

The eight most industrialised countries in the world invited their counterparts from five key emerging market economies - Brazil, China, India, Mexico and South Africa - to join the third and final day of their annual summit in St Petersburg.
