India to pick major world textiles market share, Vaghela

The Minister for Textiles, Shri Shankersinh Vaghela said that Indian Textile Industry is confident of carving out a greater share in the global markets in the days to come.

He said this while addressing the Conference of Chief Ministers/Industry and Labour Ministers of major Textile Producing states, Labour unions and Industry representatives.

Shri Vaghela said that there is resurgence in the textile sector in the post-quota period and also improved investment environment in the textile sector and the mood of industry is upbeat.

Shri Vaghela briefed the participants about the current global scenario, the progress in India's Textiles exports and the future vision and the road map for attaining the textile export target of US$ 50 billion by year 2010.

Addressing the Conference, the Minister for Agriculture, Shri Sharad Pawar said that the Government has taken a number of initiatives like Technology Mission on Cotton, which is resulted in increase in the productivity and quality of cotton.

Shri Pawar hoped that the steps taken by the Government would further enhance our comparative advantage in the cotton textile product. He said Indian textiles industry is closely linked with the country's agro-economy.

Shri Pawar said that as India's textile exports are predominantly cotton based, Indian textiles industry drives its comparative advantage from abundant availability of home-grown cotton.
