Earlier in the summer, the 2006 P.I.E. Program also featured producers from the Southeast traveling to the Far West to visit and learn from local farms and operations there.
The group will arrive in Raleigh on August 13 and begin the tour with a visit to Denning Farm in Dunn, where Max Denning will discuss tobacco, cotton, and poultry production.
Later that day, the group will travel to Gaston, to visit David Dunlow's operation, as well as other local farms. The producers will continue traveling through North Carolina on August 15 to survey other resident farms, including Josey Farms in Scotland Neck.
Once in South Carolina on August 16, the group will tour Nucor Steel and then visit Gil Roger's Farm in Hartsville. The following day, the participants will visit Bayer Research Center in Sellers and then tour Cotton, Incorporated's headquarters in Cary. On the final day of the tour, a visit to the Ramtex Denim Mill will be led by Mitch Hensley of Greensboro.
The P.I.E. Program is facilitated by the National Cotton Council's Member Services staff, in cooperation with local producer associations in the regions. This year, the Program gained a supporting grant through its new sponsor, Bayer CropScience.
