The Woolmark company announces update profiling the activities of Australian Wool Services :
Indian Wool Manufacturing Now Rivals China: The emergence of India as an increasingly important player in the global wool industry is testimony to a range of factors - the country's burgeoning apparel manufacturing industry, its ever-expanding middle class and the long-term relationships key wool representatives have at every stage of the textile pipeline.
The Woolmark Company opened its Mumbai branch in 1948, in the days of the former International Wool Secretariat. Since that time, Woolmark's India Branch Manager, Dr. S.K. Chaudhuri, says that Australia has exported in excess of 723 mkg (greasy) to his country and India has built a substantial apparel manufacturing base which now rivals China.
“The Woolmark Company has always played a major role in the development of the wool industry of India,” says Dr Chaudhuri. “India is the third largest importer of Australian wool and the second fastest growing market in the world, so it makes commercial sense to leverage Woolmark credibility.”
Growth in India is fuelled by their export market. The export of wool and wool blended textiles and readymade garments was worth US$ 466 million during 2005/06 - an increase of around 12 percent from the previous year.
And, with more than 200 Woolmark licencees in India, The Woolmark Company has innovativeindustry projects on the drawing board for 2007.
