A new strong and uniquely soft Merino yarn has been developed through collaboration between Australian Wool Innovation (AWI), Department of Agriculture and Food Western Australia (DAFWA) and famed Italian spinner Zegna Baruffa.

Shearing in the West Australian autumn rather than spring produces wool with finer tips for a given fleece diameter. These finer tips have been shown to bend more easily and as a result the products are appreciably softer, with an increased next-to-skin comfort.

Australian Wool Innovation (AWI) Chief Executive, Dr Len Stephens, said this research has been used to create a new yarn called Fine Tip Cashwool, with the help of Zegna Baruffa.

"Designed for use in underwear, t-shirts and next-to-skin evening wear, Fine Tip Cashwool will help re-define the use of wool in the textile industry," said Dr Stephens.

"The response from consumers to Fine Tip Cashwool during testing was extremely positive, with 8 out of 10 females and 9 out of 10 males finding it more comfortable against the skin than comparable wool fabrics.

This development will not only raise the profile of Australian Merino wool, but through partnership with Zegna Baruffa will build global awareness of the premium quality fibre."

Established in 1850, Zegna Baruffa Lane Borgosesia is a world-leader in the production of yarns for high quality knitwear, characterised by an extensive range of luxurious yarns in extrafine Merino wool.
