Brazil & Egypt discuss bilateral commerce of cotton

Intensify the bilateral commerce of cotton between Brazil and Egypt. That was the main theme at the seminar held at ABIT headquarters on August 23 with the presence of the Association's director superintendent, Fernando Pimentel, Sinditêxtil-SP President, Rafael Cervone Netto, ABRAPA Vice-President, Haroldo Rodrigues da Cunha and representatives for the Egyptian consulate, among other guests.

Egypt is a traditional exporter of long-fiber cotton, which has greater value on the international market. It has shown interest in acquiring Brazilian cotton, which has what is considered an average length fiber, but that is important in the textile industry.

'Egypt is a great exporter, but it is also a great importer, because we need other varieties of fiber, which Brazil has conditions to offer,” says Mohamed Agami, Egyptian commercial consul in Brazil.

During the meeting, Mohamed Agami suggested an agreement between ABIT and the Egyptian Textile Chamber so the commerce between the two countries can gain strength. He also proposed a visit to Egypt by a Brazilian mission.

For Fernando Pimentel, besides the commercial relation between the two countries, the Association could function as a certifying entity for the “Cotton from Egypt” seal of origin for interested companies in Brazil. 'Today, no Brazilian company has this seal and we can serve as a link to encourage this project,” he says.

Brazilian companies such as Dudalina, Karsten and Bonfio, among others, already use Egyptian cotton, called “white gold” in that country.

“We have been importing Egyptian cotton for ten years now and are fully satisfied with the product,” declares ABIT businessman and advisor, Alfredo Bonduki, from Bonfio.

“We know that countries like Brazil and Egypt, both with a vocation for textiles, have plenty of room where they can cooperate mutually,” adds Bonduki.
