The 2006 SDC Perkin Innovation Award, held to mark the 150th anniversary of the discovery of mauveine by William Henry Perkin, honours an individual, company or organisation that has made an outstanding contribution to colour in recent years.

It celebrates Perkin's unassailable position as the founder of the synthetic dyestuffs industry and attracted entries from all sectors of the international coloration industry.

The judging of this competition recently took place with the expert contributions of:

Dr Ian Holme, consultant on textile dyeing and finishing (chairman);
Prof. Duncan Phillips, professor of textile chemistry, University of Manchester;
Dr Mike Bartle, production director, Cloverbrook Fabrics;
Prof. John Davison, managing director, Chemographics;
Mr Arthur Welham, international technical consultant, Sclavos (SDC president);
Dr Nigel Corns, pilot plant manager, James Robinson Ltd (representative of the RSC).

Following the judging which took place at SDC headquarters in August, the Society has now announced a shortlist of entries. The finalists include:

Black colorants for ink-jet printing Dr Philip Double (Fujifilm Imaging Colorants Ltd, UK).
Coloured bubbles Dr Ram Sabnis CCol (USA).
Scanner method to assess colour fastness Dr Hossein Izadan (University of Leeds, UK).

The 2006 SDC Perkin Innovation Award represents a unique accolade for the winning entry and the winner will be announced at the SDC Gala Awards Dinner on 13 October 2006 following the Society's Colour Conference in Belfast.

A prize of £2500 will be awarded, to be spent on education and training in the field of colour, along with a specially commissioned Perkin trophy.
