According to provisional results of the Federal Statistical Office, 47,300 families were being supported through socio-educational family assistance in 2005.

The number of families was up 5 percent on a year earlier and up 39 percent on the year 2001. For 17,800 of these families such aid had been finished in the course of that year, while 29,500 families still received assistance for some time in 2006.

The main purpose of socio-educational family assistance is to improve the situation of children and juveniles within the families.

It comprises support for the entire everyday family life, for instance, recommendations for running the household and expenditure planning or the integration of the families into their social environment.
