The European Commission has welcomed the outcome of yesterday's High Level Group on textiles and clothing, which has adopted recommendations on the future competitiveness of the sector. The High Level Group also sets out a vision of the future for the textile and clothing sector until 2020.

The key recommendations of the High Level Group include a call for the sector to become leaner and more cooperative with higher productivity, and a somewhat greater proportion of its turnover dedicated to exports.

The vision set out by the High Level Group replicates the principles of industry policy as set out by the Commission's Industry Policy Communication of 5 October 2005.

Commission Vice President Günter Verheugen, responsible for enterprise and industry policy said: “The European textile industry is well advanced in making the structural changes and innovations required to adapt to the new dynamics brought by globalisation."

The Commission has been developing, together with industry, measures to improve the business environment and to facilitate structural change in order to revive the textiles and clothing industry. The second report of the High Level Group recommends action to take this work to a new level.

The High Level Group makes the following recommendations:

Research and innovation
The High Level Group concludes that it is crucial to further support research and innovation activities in the sector. The Textile and Clothing Technology Platform[1] should identify potential flagship projects following the industry's June 2006 Strategic Research Agenda.
