Cotton as an instrument of professionalization of the rural world:
Cotton has also led to producers organising themselves into associations at the village level, and in turn these local groups belong to national professional organisations.
They are run by small farmers, they organise the collection of seedcotton, evaluate input requirements and manage distribution and reimbursement.
They contribute to the improvement of living conditions through the building and running of schools, maternity hospitals and health centres, and they set up cooperative credit unions.
