The second quarter of 2006 is the fifth quarter in a row with a rising number of jobs. Lower social contributions by employers keep labour costs in check

The wages and salaries per year (fte) were 1.1 percent higher in the second quarter of 2006 than in the second quarter of 2005.

The lower contributions employers paid for (pre)pension and disablement saw to it that the real increase in labour costs was limited to 0.6 percent per year (fte).

This is more than in the first quarter, when the rise was only 0.2 percent. From a historic perspective, the rise in labour costs in the first six months of 2006 is low.

The rise in labour costs in the second quarter of 2006 was highest in business services, namely 1.1 percent.

The labour costs fell slightly in agriculture and education. The figures on the first quarter are revised. The rise in labour cost of 1.0 percent per fte was adjusted to 0.2 percent.
