Australian exports of raw and semi-processed wool for the first month of the 2006/07 season lifted above the year earlier level, bucking the year-on-year declining trend seen over several previous months, according to Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) figures.

Australian raw wool exports lifted in both volume and value terms during the month compared with the corresponding month a year earlier. Exports to Italy, Malaysia and Germany recorded strong percentage gains during July.

Together with China, India and Japan, these six markets continued to show positive growth. Meanwhile, exports to other key markets, notably Taiwan, Czech Republic and Bulgaria disappointed.

While China's market share fell back moderately from the previous month, it still accounted for well over half of all raw and semi-processed wool exports from Australia in July.

Italy is now the only Western European market amongst the top 10 export destinations for Australian wool. Exports to Italy during July nearly doubled year-on-year in volume and $A value terms, with the majority of the wool shipped to Italy being in the 19.5um and finer category.
