The rising demand for eco-textiles has emerged as one of the key developments at this season's Interstoff Asia. The biannual trade show, which has repositioned itself by focusing on quality rather than quantity, has seen a sharp rise in the number of exhibitors now offering eco-textiles.
In a market driven by competitive pricing, the growing demand for eco-textiles represents an evolution that underlines the quality focus. "Buyers for the Asia market are becoming more aware of the importance of sustainability. They are thinking more long term," Geoff Collins, business development Director of Lenzing Fibers, told WGSN.
According to Jeffery Tseng, General Manager of textiles manufacturer De Licacy, its multi-functional bamboo charcoal fabric is highly sought after by Asian buyers. Meanwhile, the Tencel brand is a hit among buyers seeking durable, premium quality eco-textiles.
Education and awareness building is key to sustaining growth of the eco-textile industry in Asia.
Katey Lam, Director of trade affairs at Messe Frankfurt, told WGSN: "There have been so many developments in eco-textiles and the most sophisticated are multi-functional. Moving forward, we hope to be able to better demonstrate the multiple benefits of eco-fibres, as well as encourage exhibitors to incorporate fashion elements into eco-textiles."
