EU-China relations face trade hurdle

The European Commission criticised China on free trade principles while stressing its importance as an EU foreign policy partner in a roadmap paper on future relations out Tuesday (24 October), but human rights experts say the text is too soft on Beijing.

"China's growing trade muscle means growing expectations," trade commissioner Peter Mandelson said. "China must fulfil its WTO obligations and commit to trading fairly. Europe must accept fierce competition. China must ensure it is fair competition."
