“In a report released by AWI in April 2006, farm enterprise benchmarking service providers in NSW, Victoria and Western Australia analysed the profitability of a range of cropping and livestock enterprises over the last five years.
“This analysis showed the following conclusions:
Wool enterprises were, on average, less profitable than cropping and dual purpose sheep enterprises but similar to cattle and prime lamb enterprises. The best Merino sheep and wool producers were achieving profit levels competitive with other livestock and cropping enterprises . Merino sheep and wool enterprises had the least volatility or year to year variation in profitability.
“This supports the view that most wool producers have more to gain from improving their wool enterprise, than they do from switching enterprises; particularly during the drought.”
