- Scottish consumers will buy 2.6 million turkeys this Christmas, weighing on average 12lbs each, costing up to £60, with a market value of £91 million.

Commenting on Christmas 2006, SRC Director, Fiona Moriarty, says: "Christmas is all important for retailers, particularly in difficult years like this one which has seen margins squeezed between rising costs and the need to discount to encourage cautious shoppers back into the stores.

"We are hoping that the consumer caution we have seen through much of Autumn will be overcome during the festive season and that sluggish sales, particularly in the non-food sector, are reversed."

"The next few weeks will be very telling and sales figures from this festive season will be a pretty good indicator of the overall state of the economy."
