Lurgi's key technology for propylene plants in China

The core concepts of the new plants in China comprise Lurgi's technologies for raw gas conditioning, methanol synthesis (5,000 tons of methanol per day with the Lurgi MegaMethanol process) and for Methanol-to-Propylene (MTP).

Both plant complexes will produce around 500,000 tons of polypropylene per year from coal. Whereas certain proprietary equipment and major machinery are to be supplied from Europe, the brunt of the material for the plants will be purchased in China. The customers having awarded the contracts are Datang International Power Generation Co Ltd. and Shenhua Ningxia Coal Industry Group (SNCG). The plants are due to go on stream in late 2008 and early 2009, respectively.

Lurgi is the world market leader in technologies to produce methanol from natural gas and coal-based synthesis gas. More than 65 percent of the world's methanol output and over 80 percent of the methanol production plants in China currently in operation and under construction are based on Lurgi technology.

Jointly with Süd-Chemie, its German catalyst suppler, Lurgi has developed specific proprietary technologies and catalysts for the production of petrochemicals from coal and natural gas. Lurgi's MTP process is the most advanced solution for the production of valuable polypropylene from coal-based synthesis gas.
