The active substance imidacloprid, which is contained in the products Gaucho and Confidor, is Bayer CropScience's biggest-selling compound and is manufactured in the insecticides production facility in Dormagen.

The successful seed dressing agent Poncho containing the active ingredient clothianidin is likewise produced there, explained Nagy. This new product has become one of Bayer CropScience's top twelve biggest-selling products in only its second season.

“Compared with the quarterly results from last year, sales of Poncho in the first quarter of 2005 increased by 162 percent to EUR 34 million.”

Overall, 2004 was an extremely successful year for Bayer CropScience. Global sales amounted to EUR 5.95 billion in 2004, a year-on-year increase of 3.2 percent, or 8.4 percent after adjustment for currency and portfolio effects.

Nagy is confident that Bayer CropScience's outstanding product pipeline means that there will always be new tasks for production in the years to come. In the past three years alone, Bayer CropScience has launched seven new active ingredients, with the multipurpose facility playing a crucial role in the development of these new products.

This is where the procedures for the manufacture of these products are optimized and initial production takes place. “The facility is now working to full capacity in its third year after going on stream,” stressed Nagy.

Bayer CropScience's production facilities are state-of-the-art and comply with the most stringent safety regulations. “That means that we can minimize any residual risk and make sure that the citizens in our neighborhood are safe from disruptions,” said Nagy.
