Barbara Spyra of Idaho, Mary Turner of Bangor and Janet Villiotte of Hampden started an online business in September 2006 with the name 'Spyra Designs'. The three women know how to knit.

Spyra is an artist and has been knitting since long, Villiotte is a practicing nurse and has five years knitting experience while Turner is a teacher and has been knitting for 20 years.

A kit designed by these ladies includes yarn and instructions for preparing belts, bags, scarves, headgear, sweaters and home accessories. Detailed instructions are given in clearly readable print.

Designs are tested prior to inclusion in the kits. Firstly the ladies select a yarn sample and knit a swatch, which is washed later to see the result. Then the design is created and knitted.

Spyra Designs kits target women who are too busy to go shopping for yarn. These designs are homemade yet fashionable, ready for knitting. Certain kits, like the ones for pillow and face cloth, contain cotton yarn.

Company's suppliers are mainly from New England.
