EU Taxation and Customs Union Commissioner László Kovács on 30 January 2007 welcomed the European Court of Justice ruling issued on the same day on a case concerning pension taxation (European Commission vs. Denmark).

"The Court clearly rules against national tax rules not allowing tax deductibility of pension contributions paid to foreign funds", the Commissioner said, "while they allow such tax deductibility for contributions paid to national funds. It is the culmination of almost six years of work by the Commission to create a single market for occupational pensions without tax obstacles."

Under the authority of Commissioner László Kovács, the Directorate-General takes an active part in the achievement of the strategic aims of the European Union.

In this context it aims to:
manage, defend and develop the customs union as a vital part of protecting the external borders of the EU;
