Clothing & Footwear price fall in Jan CPI

Consumer Prices in January, as measured by the CPI, decreased by 0.1% in the month. This compares to a decrease of 0.3% in January of last year and as a result, the annual rate of inflation increased to 5.2%, up from 4.9% in December.

The EU Harmonised Index of Consumer Prices (HICP) decreased by 0.6% in the month, compared to a decrease of 0.5% in January 2006. The annual rate of inflation, as measured by the HICP, decreased from 3.0% in December to 2.9% in January.

There were decreases in Clothing & Footwear (-1.5%) and Furnishings (-0.9%). The most significant monthly price changes were decreases in Clothing & Footwear (-14.3%) and Furnishings (-2.6%).

Clothing & Footwear and Furnishings decreased due to the traditional January sales.
