A current survey by the Bremen Cotton Exchange has confirmed that raw cotton from the 2006/07 crop is again completely free of pollutants.
Neither heavy metals nor pesticides were detected in the samples tested by the Bremen Cotton Exchange. This result underlines the results of the test series, which the Exchange has carried out regularly since 1991: Cotton is rightly recommended by dermatologists.
For the tests, the Bremen Cotton Exchange receives a series of random samples from cotton bales that land in Bremen. These are then examined in the independent Hohenstein Research Institute for traces of pesticides and heavy metals, according to Eco-Tex Standard 100, Product Class 1. Product Class 1 contains the strictest evaluation criteria.
It refers to textiles and textile playthings for babies and toddlers to the age of three, e.g. underwear, romper suits, bedclothes, bedding, soft toys etc.
“The more intensive the skin contact of a textile is (and the more sensitive the skin), the higher the human ecological requirements that must be fulfilled”.
In total, cotton from twelve countries was examined in the latest test series: Brazil, Greece, India, Israel,Kazakhstan, Mali, Zimbabwe, Sudan, Syria, Tanzania, Chad, USA. Result: According to Eco-Tex Standard 100, no pollutant contamination.
