Industrial new orders up 1.7% in euro area

The euro area (EA13)1 industrial new orders index2 increased by 1.7% in May 2007 compared with April 2007. The index fell by 0.6% in April3 and rose by 2.9% in March. EU271 new orders gained 3.2% in May 2007, after a decrease of 1.6% in April3 and a rise of 2.7% in March.

Excluding ships, railway and aerospace equipment4,industrial new orders increased by 1.3% in the euro area and by 1.5% in the EU27 in May 2007.

In May 2007 compared with May 2006, industrial new orders increased by 9.1% in the euro area and by 10.2% in the EU27. Total industry, excluding ships, railway and aerospace equipment, grew by 5.5% in the euro area and by 7.1% in the EU27.

In May 2007 compared with April 2007, new orders for machinery and equipment increased by 4.8% in the euro area and by 4.1% in the EU27.

Transport equipment rose by 3.9% and 5.8% respectively. Manufacturing of electrical and electronic equipment gained 1.8% in the euro area and 3.0% in the EU27. New orders for basic metals and fabricated metal products declined by 0.1% in the euro area but increased by 0.3% in the EU27.

The index for textiles and textile products lost 0.3% and 0.9% respectively. Manufacturing of chemicals and chemical products decreased by 0.6% in the euro area and by 0.9% in the EU27.

In May 2007, among the Member States for which data are available, total manufacturing working on orders rose in seventeen Member States and fell in Ireland (-9.7%), Denmark (-4.4%) and the Netherlands (-1.7%). The highest increases were recorded in Latvia (+22.0%), Bulgaria (+14.7%) and Hungary (+13.8%).
