Australian woolgrowers aren't the only sector reliant on this trade. Despite having the world's largest sheep population, China's wool textile industry relies heavily upon imports for their raw material, 70 per cent of which is Australian.
“The Australian Wool Industry Free Trade Committee is seeking action through various levels within Government, specifically DFAT and DAFF, as well as the Australian Embassy, to resolve the matter as quickly as possible,” said Mr van Rooyen.
“China has been reluctant to make any changes to their quota administration. Their response has been to emphasise the need for stability and an orderly market. Ironically, their administration of the quota has had the opposite result, creating uncertainty in the market.
“We simply have to get clarity on why this has happened and how to avoid it in future. More broadly, we need change in how they administer the TRQ.
“The announcement that TRQ limits will be imposed on wool means early resolution of this matter is critical.”
