Build home-grown textile brands, globally – Kamal Nath

Shri Kamal Nath, Minister for Commerce and Industry has said that in view of the large growing domestic market and to face the challenges in the International market, it is essential for the country to create international 'Home-grown Brand' in the textile sector. Shri Kamal Nath said this while inaugurating the two-day 'Tex Summit 2007', here today.
The inaugural function was attended by Shri Shankersinh Vaghela, Minister of Textiles, Shri Oscar Fernandes, Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Labour and Employment, Shri E.V.K.S. Elangovan, Minister of State for Textiles, Dr. C. Rangarajan, Chairman, Economic Advisory Council to the Prime Minister, Shri Jagdish Narayan Rai, Minister, Department of Handloom and Silk, Government of Uttar Pradesh besides leading industrialist from textile sector, academicians, economists and several senior officers of the Government of India.
In his inaugural address Shri Kamal Nath said that for building 'home-grown brand' internationally, the Commerce Ministry can support the textile Ministry from its India Brand Equity Fund. In order to face challenges, Shri Kamal Nath said that we have to think about the strategy for bringing agricultural sector into the folds of commercial sector. For this, it will be appropriate to impart training to the agricultural workers to facilitate their migration to the textile sector.
He further stated that as India globalizes there would be challenges from the new competitors like Bangladesh, Cambodia and Central American countries. Both the industry and government have to introspect with a view to face new competition. He also stated that we have great advantage of our large and growing domestic market and the target of achieving 10 per cent of the global trade is achievable. Regarding anti-dumping duties, Shri Kamal Nath said the government would continue follow pro-actively and in a transparent manner.
