“It is estimated that almost 40 per cent of Australian Merino wool sold at auction would meet European Union Ecolabel standards – a scheme that encourages the supply and demand of environmentally-friendly products.
“AWI is in the process of conducting a life cycle analysis (LCA), to determine scientifically how much water, energy and carbon dioxide are used to produce Australian wool garments.
“The AWI-funded LCA will be completed in full in June 2008, but we will have completed preliminary findings by October 2007. In a nutshell, its objective is to produce a peer reviewed 'white paper' establishing the environmental footprint of Australian wool comparative to cotton, polyester and acrylic fibres.
“AWI will collaborate with government agencies and non-government organisations provide information, programs, group workshop and incentives for wool producers to maintain the natural environment's health.”
