China looking at BRC standards to boost product reputation

Chinese officials are exploring how the British Retail Consortium's (BRC) Global Standards could be used as part of moves to secure the reputation of Chinese products.

In discussions with the BRC, the Commercial Office of the Chinese Embassy said it is concerned about recent negative publicity for the 'Made in China' label.

The BRC is recommending its new Global Standard for Consumer Products, available for the first time in Chinese, to improve manufacturing standards in China.

The rigorously audited Standard enables suppliers to show retailers that they have reached, and maintain, high levels of product safety.

The BRC Standard covers almost everything sold in shops that is not food. For example DIY and travel goods, electronics, tools and equipment, telecommunications, home wares, white goods, furnishings and non-prescription pharmaceuticals.

Most large UK retailers require suppliers to demonstrate compliance with the BRC Standard before they will buy from that manufacturer.

The Embassy's Commercial Office is backing a series of supplier briefings in four major Chinese cities during late November. The briefings will take place in Beijing, Shanghai, Shenzhen and Guangzhou.

They are also supported by the UK Government as well as global certification bodies, the British Standards Institute and international safety testing company Intertek.
