Malaria is a deadly but preventable disease. Student designers focused on ways to reduce malaria infections in the Congo River basin of Africa, and identified and solved specific problems that existed with conventional mosquito nets.
ColorGuard is a unique malaria protection system that overcame aesthetic and practical barriers to use. Conventional mosquito nets are often misused or unused as they are not very appealing aesthetically and mosquitoes can still bite through them.
The ColorGuard bed net is made of white double-layer bite-proof netting that can be dyed to the user's liking with special insecticide dyes, which both prevent the mosquito from coming in contact with the user and kill the mosquito on contact.
The bed net is fabricated and placed in a drawstring sack made of the same material. This sack doubles as a head net for use while outside the bed net.
Students also created a transportation plan using hovercrafts to distribute the bed nets in areas without reliable transportation infrastructure. The fabric net system creates a protected sleeping area, easily erected and transported.
