Alim Jute Mills (AJM) recently decided to suspend all operations for one month beginning September 22 due to severe financial crisis and administrative issues.

Considering this situation, 268 workers opted for voluntary retirement scheme (VRS) and submitted their resignations to the Bangladesh Jute Mills Corporation.

AJM union President Abdus Salam addressed press conference yesterday at Khulna Press Club, discussing key problems in the struggling industry.

The officials stressed that the BJMC was not providing adequate funds for purchasing raw jute. This inevitably had an unfavorable impact on the organization, which was until then, a lucrative enterprise.

Discussions at the meet concluded with workers demanding for the withdrawal of lay-off, payment of wages for 33 weeks, lay-off benefits and other dues.
