Trader orgs plan biggest protest against retail giants

Mumbai will see the largest protest of Traders, Hawkers and Mathadi workers against the entry of National and Multinational Corporations into the retail trade. The protest rally is being organized under the banner of the Vyapaar Rozgaar Suraksha Kriti Samiti, which is a joint action committee formed under the leadership of the Federation of the Association of Maharashtra (FAM) which is representing 750 trade associations in Maharashtra.
Some of the prominent organizations who are stakeholders in this campaign are Grain Rice and Oil Seeds Merchants Association (GROMA), Maharashtra Rajya Mathadi Transport and General Kamgar Union, Mumbai Vyapar Mahasang (MVM), Apna Bazaar, Navi Mumbai Hawkers Union, Center of Indian Trade Unions (CITU), Yusuf Mehralli Yuva Beradri and India FDI Watch.
The campaign for the movement for retail democracy has taken several meetings in the last few weeks for preparation of the rally organized by local trader organizations at Bhiwandi, Ulhasnagar, Panvel, Khapoli, Pune, Kolhapur, Jalgaon, Mulund, Goregaon, Malad, Vashi etc. A Rozgar Bachao Abhiyan Yatra was taken in all the traditional markets.
All the APMC markets in Maharashtra will be closed in protest along with all the retailers, wholesalers, hawkers who will attend the rally will do so after shutting down their establishments on 10th of October, resulting in one of the largest voluntary shutdown of trade and industry in the country to protest against the entry of FDI in retail.
