Meanwhile, summer held firm across the eastern half of the continent as the jet stream shifted well north into Canada. High temperatures felt more like late August as readings in the 80s were common across a large portion of the U.S. with some 90s south.
Even the Maritimes were well above normal (70s/low 80s). This sharp contrast in temperatures provided the battleground in the interior for strong storms across much of the Plains and Prairies with some severe weather. A weak disturbance in the eastern Gulf of Mexico provided daily showers and thunderstorms across Florida and much of the Southeast U.S.

Consumer Impact in the East/Mid-Western North America: It was a very challenging week for retailers selling all manner of fall items such as sweaters, fleece, boots, cold weather consumables, etc. Columbus Day Weekend seasonal sales were likely sluggish and well off last year's pace, although the dry weather was optimal for consumer store visits.

Consumer Impact in the Western Portions of North America: The much cooler weather provided a strong surge in demand for fall apparel. Some locations north were cold enough to stimulate early demand for winter apparel and heating products.
