Record heat was experienced in many locations. For instance, Philadelphia recorded 89 degrees F on the 10th, shattering the old record of 84 degrees F for that date. The contrast was huge out West as unseasonably cold weather accompanied a very strong Pacific storm system. Heavy rains were common along the West Coast with heavy mountain snows across the Intermountain West.

Big changes were on the way, however, for the East Coast as much cooler weather made it into those areas late week where summer was still holding strong. Although temperatures cooled to levels that were typical for mid-October, the change from the recent unseasonable heat and humidity was large, averaging 20 to 25 degrees. This was great news for retailers with seasonal items sitting on shelves.

The most significant rainfall in weeks (1 to 2 inches) occurred across the Mid-Atlantic states. Another strong Pacific storm system pushed onto the West Coast late week providing more heavy rains to coastal areas.

Consumer Impact in the East/Mid-Western North America: It was a week of strong contrasts as the continued sluggish demand early week gave way to a late week surge for all manner of seasonal product.

Consumer Impact in the Western Portions of North America: It was a good week for fall demand as temperatures remained seasonably cool in most locations. Periods of rain helped to amplify seasonal apparel sales.
