The METRO Group increased the number of its new apprentices once again this year. Through Sept 1, a total of 3,152 young people received apprenticeship positions at METRO Group companies. This is about 5 percent more job starters than last year.
All METRO Group divisions contributed to this positive result. In particular, Media Markt and Saturn (together +15.4 percent) and Metro Cash & Carry Deutschland (+5.6 percent) significantly increased the number of their apprenticeship positions compared with last year.
The retail company has continued to raise its share of apprenticeship positions over the past several years: As of Sept 1, 2007, the overall number of apprentices at the METRO Group was 8,529, constituting 8.7 percent of the METRO workforce.
As a result, the METRO Group is one of the largest vocational trainers in Germany and actively helps combat unemployment among young people.
In addition, about 40 learning-disabled young people started their job training at the METRO Group once again this past summer as part of the VAmB project („Verzahnte Ausbildung mit den Berufsbildungswerken“), an integrated training program being carried out in cooperation with vocational education centers.
Since 2004, the METRO Group has been active in this integration project. In this effort, it works closely with the Federal Council of Vocational Training Centers, the Federal Employment Agency, integration offices and the German Ministry for Labor and Social Affairs.
On Oct. 8, 2007, the integration project received the award for initiatives in occupational and professional training presented by the German Chambers of Industry and Commerce in Berlin.
METRO Group is one of the most important international retailing companies. In 2006 the group reached sales of about € 60 billion. The company has a headcount of some 270,000 employees and operates about 2,400 outlets in 30 countries.
