ExxonMobil Chemical Company broke ground on its second world-scale petrochemical project in Singapore. Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong was the Guest of Honour at the groundbreaking ceremony, which was held at the future site of the fully-integrated project on Jurong Island.
“This project will add to ExxonMobil Chemical's global supply capability and, in particular, serve the growing markets in Asia,” said Michael J. Dolan, president, ExxonMobil Chemical Company. “The project also signifies our commitment to and confidence in Singapore as a desirable place to grow our business.”
When the project is completed, ExxonMobil's largest owned and operated petrochemical complex and the Corporation's largest integrated chemical and refining site will be located in Singapore. Project start-up is expected in early 2011.
“We would like to thank the Singapore Government for its trust and confidence and for making this project possible. We are pleased to contribute to Singapore's vision of being a global petrochemicals hub,” said Kwa Chong Seng, chairman and managing director, ExxonMobil Asia Pacific Pte Ltd.
The project will bring new jobs to Singapore and the region. It will result in approximately 400 new plant and business positions in Singapore and construction activity will require up to 10,000 people at its peak.
The project will employ ExxonMobil's latest proprietary technologies and will produce a range of high value products to meet growing demand.
The technology to produce high value products, including Vistamaxx specialty elastomers and Exceed polyethylene will be used for the first time by ExxonMobil in Asia.
On September 5, ExxonMobil Chemical Company announced that it had completed its detailed study of a second petrochemical project in Singapore and made the final decision to proceed with construction.
