Majority of Asian manufacturers still operate under an old business model (the OEM), playing the single role of manufacturing, where low price becomes the key to gaining orders; this operating strategy jeopardizes the competitiveness of the business, as fierce competition arises from neighbouring countries with their abundant supply of labour and excellent manufacturing abilities.

The only way to sustain or further expand market share is for apparel manufacturers to step ahead and elevate themselves from a product manufacturer to a product developer.

Australian Wool Innovation (AWI) was pleased to host a delegation of respected textile industry representatives from China, Hong Kong and India. The delegation spent time visiting various organisations within the Australian wool industry; learning about Australian Merino wool and how it can add value to their business.

A wealth of information was provided including the existence and application of innovative Merino products, an overview of Australian Merino marketing and consumer insights and a detailed first hand inspection of various stages of the Australian Merino wool supply pipeline.

Meeting members of organisations such as Australian Wool Exchange (AWEX), the Australian Wool Testing Authority (AWTA), Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) and Australian woolgrowers presented the delegates with a rare opportunity to obtain a comprehensive and detailed understanding of the industry which provides a premium world class product.
