Since previous fiscal year, Pakistan textile industry, one of the major foreign exchange earners is troubled with numerous problems like rising prices of raw material, lack skilled labourers and more over competitions from the neighbouring countries is creating havoc on this sector.

In order to find a solution for the crisis stricken textile industry, concerned All Pakistan Textile Mills Association (APTMA) and Shahzada Alam Manoo, Minister for Textile and Commerce met on Thursday, November 29. The meeting was also attended by the secretaries of the Commerce and Textile Ministries.

In an exclusive interview with Fibre2fashion, Mr Akbhar Sheikh, Chairman Media Committee of APTMA, said that the delegation focused on provision of level playing field to Pakistan's textile industry.

Mr Sheikh said, “APTMA's proposals suggested permission for duty free import of the raw materials of the industry including cotton and MMF (man made fiber) from all sources and using all available means of transport (including road transport from India) and if spinning industry is allowed duty free inputs it was willing to facilitate duty free imports of yarn/fabric for downstream industries."

According to the Media Chairman, APTMA claimed that this will lead to regional integration of textile trade and will increase efficiencies across the region. If these proposals are accepted along with the assuranceof uninterrupted energy supply, no new subsidies to the industry will be required.
