A repeat performance later in the week brought more ice into the same areas and extended into the Upper Midwest to include Chicago. Temperatures warmed significantly mid-week in the East, ahead of these storms, with temperatures touching 70 F as far north as Washington, D.C.
Much colder air followed, accompanied by the first significant winter storm in the Northeast which brought a slushy mess to most of the major cities, but several inches of snow in New England including Boston by late in the week. Meanwhile, the West saw a stormy start to the week with heavy rains in California, although the remainder of the week was seasonably cold and rather dry, even in the Northwest.
Consumer Impact in the East/Mid-Western North America: The wintry weather across the Midwest and Northeast during the week severely hampered holiday retail traffic, driving increased demand for snow and ice removal products, winter car care, etc.
Consumer Impact in the Western Portions of North America: The early week storminess gave way to a very favorable cold and dry environment, providing a boost for retailers as seasonal sales were brisk.
