Forty talented designers have been selected for The Edge 2008 – Design and Innovation Showcase which will be staged at the 2008 AUSTRALIAN INTERNATIONAL FURNITURE FAIR at the Sydney Exhibition Centre, Darling Harbour on 6-8 February 2008.
The Edge is Sydney's premier event for new and emerging designers who will get the opportunity to display their creations ranging from modern lighting, contemporary coffee tables, innovative fruit racks to furniture for children.
“We are really impressed with the high standard of entrants for this year's event, we look for designers who can be leaders in the market and produce cutting edge and innovative pieces.
The 2008 line-up includes designers who have thoughtfully executed pieces that take into account the environment in which they will be used and the choice of materials to reflect this” says The Edge curator, Uli Hasel.
Many of the designers this year have combined their design with the current environmental trends by using natural materials as these issues become more relevant.
“Designers are embracing the idea of using sustainable materials and we have several examples of this in 2008, such as Brad Stebbings Light Of Man modular pendant light (NSW) and Noah Birch's BESSIE chair (WA) and Liam O'Briens FunfoldKids Chair which uses 100% recyclable materials” Uli Hasel said.
Under 70 applications were received this year across three divisions; Concept, Commercial and Student – which was the strongest category, attracting more than 50 per cent of the entries. Applicants came from across Australia with impressive local talent. The Edge will also include an international designer from New Zealand.
