Large downward contribution from clothing & footwear

In the year to January, the consumer prices index (CPI) rose by 2.2 per cent, up from 2.1 per cent in December. In the year to January, the all items retail prices index (RPI) rose by 4.1 per cent, up from 4.0 per cent in December.
Over the same period, the all items RPI excluding mortgage interest payments index (RPIX) rose by 3.4 per cent, up from 3.1 per cent in December.
The largest upward contribution to the change in the CPI annual rate came from transport costs. This was due to operation of personal transport equipment.
There was a further large upward contribution from furniture and furnishings where price discounting had less effect than in the previous year, across a range of furniture.
There was a large downward contribution from clothing and footwear. Overall the prices of garments fell by more than last year. Also there was a small downward effect from footwear, with prices falling more than last year.
