Chemical major BASF received the top award – the “Entec Medal” – at the “IChemE Gala Awards Evening” in recognition of the development and application of its innovative ionic liquids, London, United Kingdom. At the same event, the company was also honored for developing dividing wall columns and for being the first company in the world to use this technology at the production scale.
- Third award for BASF's ionic liquids
- Industrial introduction of dividing wall columns honored
- Awards granted by the “Institution of Chemical Engineers”
BASF's first large-scale industrial process worldwide that uses ionic liquids allows fast and simple removal of acids from reaction mixtures, which means that time-consuming filtration is no longer necessary. 1 Methylimidazol, which is added instead of other bases in this process, also acts as a catalyst and speeds up the reaction considerably. The ionic liquids team had received the “Innovation Award” of the “European Chemical News” trade journal and the BASF Innovation Award in 2004.
These prestigious awards, established in 1994, are granted annually by the Institution of Chemical Engineers (IChemE), the British association of chemical and process engineers. With its “IChemE Awards”, the association aims to “reward innovation and excellence.” It intends to celebrate outstanding contributions to safety and environment, sustainable development and other aspects of the process industries. The major criteria on which the awards are granted are originality, technical innovation, business success, impact on environment and safety, and options for wider application.
