The dismantling of textile quotas since January this year, and the subsequent performance of Indian textile and clothing industries, has been in the news. Figures issued by Directorate General of Commercial Intelligence & Statistics India (DGCIS) suggest that the country's export performance in the sector particularly in the US and European markets, has been promising during this period. Concurring on this, Chairman of The Cotton Textiles Export Promotion Council of India (TEXPROCIL) B K Patodia commented: “India has done exceedingly well in the US market achieving a growth of 29.5 percent during Jan-June 2005 when compared to the previous year.” Comparing with the export growth of other countries to the US, he informed that India stood second only to China registering a 10.98 percent rate, while traditional competitors Pakistan, Indonesia and Turkey recorded lower rates. He singled out home textiles category which the registered growth rate in individual categories; pillowcases (56.24 percent), sheeting (56.31 percent), bedspreads (12.06 percent) and towels (19.11 percent). Cotton bedlinen, table and toilet linen were the other home textile segments that increased the Indian exports share in that region. About European Union market, he added the home textiles segment again performed well at 6.82 percent, during Jan-April 2005. With new restrictions being imposed in the EU and the US on Chinese textiles, Indian apparel & clothing companies had good opportunity to enhance their market share, Patodia concluded.
