ITGLWF raises objection to unlawful retrenchment

Turkish firms must provide meals, transport to and from the work place and maternity leave amongst other workers' perks. Unemployment in Turkey is officially 10 percent: unofficially it is over 20 percent and the grey economy of seasonal labourers and uninsured workers exceeds legally registered ones, nowhere more so than tanneries.

Workers at Desa enjoy conditions that are the envy of other sectors. It is one of two leather firms listed on the Istanbul Stock Exchange and they have, significantly, clocked up quality awards, in 2002 gaining the coveted Marks & Spencer Quality Certificate, MSQR.
