North Carolina based home furnishing and improvement Company Lowe's announced that the company, and its customers, raised more than $8.4 million dollars to benefit the American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund.

As part of its longstanding commitment to supporting the disaster relief efforts of the American Red Cross, Lowe's conducts an in-store customer donation program to support the Disaster Relief Fund, which allows the Red Cross to provide shelter, food, counseling and other assistance to disaster victims across the United States.

This year, Lowe's launched its in-store customer donation program on August 29 in response to Hurricane Katrina's devastating blow to the Gulf Coast, pledging to match customer donations up to $1 million. Just five days later Lowe's increased its match of customer contributions to a total of $2 million. Through the program's end on October 10, customers had donated more than $6.4 million, along with the Lowe's match of $2 million, for a total of $8.4 to benefit Red Cross disaster relief efforts.

"Lowe's wants to say a special thanks to all of the customers, school children, community groups and own employees that so generously donated to the Red Cross through stores," said Larry D. Stone, Chairman of Lowe's Charitable and Educational Foundation. "From school children bringing in jars of coins, to the contractor and other customers that donated sums large and small, all of these donations are helping the Red Cross assistthe thousands of families, friends and employees in communities impacted by Hurricane Katrina, Hurricane Rita, and thousands of other disasters."
