Central London retail sales decline in Sept says BRC

Helen Dickinson, Head of Retail, KPMG comments that the Saturday trading performance of the recent Festival Weekend – which saw many retailers working together to tempt shoppers in by pedestrianising Oxford Street – is included in these September figures but despite this added impetus, Central London continues to suffer. However, when compared to -8.9% in July and -11.5% in August, September's results are a valiant performance which hopefully will bring back some optimism for Christmas.

The BRC, in conjunction with KPMG - the Professional Services Group, runs the Retail Sales Monitor. This quick, straightforward and accurate monitor provides the participating companies with invaluable management information on a regular and reliable basis. The scheme measures changes in the actual value of retail sales from participants.

Originally it was set up at the request of the members of the BRC to have access to aggregated weekly sales data which could provide them with a fast and accurate comparison to their own company's performance. The BRC-KPMG Retail Sales Monitor has now developed into a key UK economic indicator.

The British Retail Consortium is the lead trade association representing the whole range of retailers, from the large multiples and department stores through to independents, selling a wide selection of products through centre of town, out of town, rural and virtual stores.
